Healing Isn’t a Straight Line

There’s this belief many of us quietly carry that once we begin to heal, the path ahead will be clear, calm, and linear. That once we cry enough tears, meditate enough mornings, or write enough affirmations, the pain will simply dissolve and never return.

But healing doesn’t work like that. Real healing is not a straight line. It’s not a clean break from the past.

It’s not a perfectly stacked ladder where each step takes you further from your pain. More often, it’s a spiral. You move forward, then loop back. Some days, you’ll feel light and clear. Other days, a scent, a song, or a silence will pull you right back into the ache you thought you’d left behind.

And that doesn’t mean you’re broken. That doesn’t mean you’re failing. That’s just what healing looks like when it’s honest.

There will be moments when you’re proud of how far you’ve come. You’ll notice yourself reacting differently – softer, wiser, more grounded. You’ll celebrate the days when your heart doesn’t ache as much, or when your body feels a little more alive. But then, out of nowhere, you may find yourself crying again, tired again, questioning everything again.

Please don’t mistake those moments as a return to square one. You’re not going backward. You’re simply visiting a deeper layer of your story, the one you’re now strong enough to face. This is how healing works. Not all at once. Not all in order. But one tender, unravelling, remembering breath at a time.

So, if today you feel like you’re starting over. If you’re tired of holding it all together, if you’re frustrated that your progress feels invisible – take a deep breath. Place your hand gently over your heart and remind yourself:

“I’m not broken. I’m becoming.”
“I’m not behind. I’m returning.”
“This is not a setback. It’s a recalibration.”

You’re doing better than you think. And you’re not alone.
